Getting to Know the Native Mango of the Colombian Caribbean: Fruit Shape, Size, and Quality as a Basis for Its Productive and Commercial Use

Abstract

The Mango Criollo represents a valuable genetic resource, shaped by traditional farming practices, and holds significant potential for agroindustry and food security. This study aimed to morphologically characterize 27 accessions (types Hilaza and Azúcar) from Colombia’s national germplasm collection, using qualitative and quantitative descriptors. The analysis revealed high phenotypic variability, particularly in peduncle length (CV=73.42%) and mature plant height (CV=71.99%), while fruit dimensions showed greater uniformity. Physicochemical traits such as Brix showed low variability, whereas pH exhibited substantial differences. Cluster analysis (WARD method) grouped accessions into two main clusters aligned with mango types, and ANOVA confirmed significant differences (p<0.05) in fruit, seed, and inflorescence traits. Qualitative traits like fruit shape also showed strong associations (p<0.001). These findings provide critical insights for the conservation and strategic use of criollo mango genetic resources.
